As well as being known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine, Hildegard of Bingen (German: Hildegard von Bingen; Latin: Hildegardis Bingensis) was a German Benedictine abbess that was a polymath who worked as a writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, as well as a medical author and practitioner. She is one of the most well-known and widely-recorded sacred monophony composers in recent times. She is considered by many to be a patron saint of musicians and writers.

Early Life of Hildegard

Hildegard of Bingen was the eighth daughter of a noble family and was born in 1098. Mechtild of Merxheim-Nahet and Hildebert of Bermersheim, members of a free lesser noble family serving the Count Meginhard of Sponheim, were her parents. Although there are records of only seven elder siblings, Hildegard is typically regarded as their youngest and eighth child because she was born prematurely ill. Hildegard claims in her Vita that she saw visions since she was a very small child. Hildegard’s parents gave the Church their daughter and her dowry when she was a young girl. The offering, which was a symbolic marriage, was probably made without Hildegard’s knowledge or agreement. At the Disibodenberg Benedictine Abbey, Hildegard committed herself to the holy life. In 1112, on All Saints Day, she took her vows.

Hildegard's Visions

At the age of three, the girl began to see bright objects, but she soon realised that this skill was unique to her and she disguised it for many years.
The family sent this unusual girl to an anchoress named Jutta for religious instruction when she was eight years old. She referred to this aspect of her experience as “visio,” which is Latin for “vision,” and she understood that it was a gift that she was unable to convey to others.
The five senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, according to Hildegard, were the lenses through which she perceived everything in the light of God.
The only person in whom Hildegard confided about her visions was Jutta, who then told Hildegard’s tutor and subsequently secretary, Volmar. Hildegard claimed to have had a vision in 1148 that told her to leave Disibodenberg Monastery and create a new monastery atop the neighbouring Mount of St. Rupert as her fame and her religious order rose. She used these visions as inspiration for compositions and wrote about them in theological publications. In addition to founding her own convent, she also invented her own language and one of the earliest musical dramas.

Since its initial publication in 1913, Charles Singer’s retroactive diagnosis of Hildegard of Bingen as a migraineur has gained widespread acceptance. However, abbess Hildegard von Bingen depicted and described her migraine auras as divine experiences in 12th-century Germany. She believed that the stars and sparks that fell and converted to black embers carried a doomsday warning. She also experienced other migraine-related hallucinations when she saw a “celestial metropolis.” On September 17, 1179, at the age of 81, Saint Hildegard passed away in the monastery she had established at Rupertsberg, close to Bingen. It is unknown what caused Hildegard of Binge’s passing. But she was 81 years old when she passed away, which is a typical age for passing away in the modern world. When Hildegard passed away, her sisters claimed they observed two streams of light crossing the room where she was dying from the sky.

Some of Hildegard’s writings are unknown as to their exact dates of composition, while the Ordo Virtutum is believed to have been written as early as 1151. It is the oldest extant music play that wasn’t produced for church use. It is neither a complement to or homage to the Mass or the Office of a particular feast; rather, it is an autonomous Latin morality play with music (82 songs). The Ordo virtutum, 43 antiphons, 18 responsories, along with sequences, hymns, and chants, are among Hildegard’s most significant compositions. In actuality, it is the first surviving musical theatre that is not associated with a liturgy.
