Early Years

Yulia Ivanovna nee Chirikova, his mother, was a proficient pianist. Modest was the youngest of the four kids the couple had. Both of his first two brothers, Alexie, passed away while they were little. Filaret Mussorgsky, his third and last surviving sibling, was three years older than he was.

He originally began learning the piano with his mother when he turned six. Later, their German governess took up the position and oversaw their education, which consisted mostly of speaking German and French well. Modest started learning to play tiny Franz Liszt compositions when he was seven years old. He performed a large concerto by John Field in front of house guests when he was nine years old.
Modest and Filaret were both sent to St. Petersburg in August 1849 to enroll in classes at the Saint Peters School, a prestigious German language institution better known as the Petrischule, where they would be prepared for military service. They put up with a school inspector who is a friend of the family there. Modest swiftly won over the school inspector with his piano skills. The younger son’s musical aptitude was also recognized by his father, who hired future St. Petersburg Conservatory music professor Anton Gerke to teach him the piano.
He enrolled in the Imperial Guards Cadet School in 1852, and his proficiency at the piano quickly earned him a lot of admiration from his fellow students. He dedicated his debut piece, “Podpraporshchik” (Porte-Enseigne Polka), to his classmates that same year.
He was granted exceptional privileges at the Cadet School, probably because the director’s daughter was also one of Gerke’s pupils, allowing him to continue his piano lessons with him. However, it was a difficult environment for a sensitive child like him, and he quickly turned to alcohol for short-term solace.
