Joseph Haydn: The Father of Classical Symphony (1732-1809)

Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer and musician who was a central figure in the development of the Classical style of music. He lived from 1732 to 1809 and was one of the most prolific and influential composers of his time. Haydn’s contributions to the classical music repertoire include more than 100 symphonies, dozens of operas and choral works, and numerous piano sonatas, string quartets, and other chamber music pieces.

Early Years

Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, Austria in 1732. He was the second of twelve children born to Mathias Haydn, a wheelwright and an amateur musician, and Anna Maria Koller, who came from a family of cooks. He showed a great talent for music at an early age, and he was sent to Vienna to join the choir school of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, he spent nine years as a chorister. It was there that he received his early musical education which formed the foundation of his musical career.

Several of Haydn’s siblings died in infancy or early childhood, and little is known about their lives. His brother Johann Matthias, who was also a musician, died in infancy. Haydn’s sister Anna Maria, who was born in 1738, died when she was just two years old. Two of his brothers, Franz Mathias and Johann Baptist, died before reaching adulthood.
 
After leaving the choir school, Haydn found it difficult to make a living as a musician and was forced to work as a valet and music teacher for several years. Nevertheless, he continued to compose music and develop his musical skills. In 1761, he was appointed as Kapellmeister to the wealthy Esterházy family, a position he held for over thirty years.
 
During this time, Haydn had the opportunity to travel and compose music for a variety of musical forms, including operas, symphonies, and chamber music. He also had access to the best musicians and instruments, which allowed him to perfect his craft. By the end of his life, Haydn was widely recognized as one of the greatest composers of his time and was celebrated throughout Europe.
