He is best known for his contributions to keyboard music, especially for the organ, and his elegant melodies, intricate counterpoint, and rich harmonies. Pachelbel composed numerous works for organ, including preludes, fugues, and toccatas, which are considered some of the finest examples of Baroque keyboard music. He also wrote chamber music and vocal music, including cantatas, motets, and hymns. Pachelbel’s music had a significant influence on later composers, including J.S. Bach, who studied and performed his works. Despite facing financial instability and personal tragedy, Pachelbel remained dedicated to his art and continued to compose and perform throughout his life. Early Years

Pachelbel was born in Nuremberg, Germany, baptSeptember 1, 1653. He was the son of Johann Pachelbel Sr., a wine merchant, and Anna Maria Mair, who came from a family of musicians. Pachelbel showed an early aptitude for music, he received his early musical training from the two leading local instructors, Heinrich Schwemmer, who was an organist at the local church, provided him with his initial musical education, and G. C. Wecker, who taught him composition and instrumental performance.

He enrolled in the University of Altdorf on June 29th, 1669, and held the position of organist for the Lorenzkirche there as well. After less than a year, he was forced to leave the University because his father could not afford to support him. He most likely enrolled in the Gymnasium Poeticum at Regensburg in the spring of 1670, when his remarkable academic accomplishments earned him a unique scholarship above and beyond the institution’s standard quota. Additionally, he was allowed to study music outside of the gym with Kaspar Prentz, a student of J. Kerll, K. He most likely studied the works of prominent Italian composers under Prentz.
 
He started working for Prince Johann Georg, Duke of Saxe-Eisenach, as a Court Organist at Eisenach on May 4, 1677, under the direction of Capellmeister Daniel Eberlin. Even though Pachelbel had received no other job offers after roughly a year, Eberlin graciously provided him with a recommendation in which he called Pachelbel a “perfect and rare virtuoso.” On May 18, 1678, he departed from Eisenach.
 
During his time in Erfurt, Pachelbel got married twice. On October 25, 1681, he married Barbara Gabler; however, the plague claimed the lives of both Barbara and their son in September 1683. This occurrence most likely had an impact on Pachelbel’s first piece of music, Musicalische Sterbens-Gedancken (“Musical Thoughts on Death,” Erfurt, 1683), a collection of chorale variations. On August 24, 1684, Pachelbel married Judith Drommer (Trummert), a coppersmith’s daughter. Five boys and two daughters were born to them; Johann Michael became an instrument maker, and two of his sons, Wilhelm Hieronymus and Charles Theodore Pachelbel, also became composers for the organ. Amalia, one of his daughters, became well-known as a painter and engraver.
