Early Years
Rossini’s early life was marked by his musical talent and his family’s support. His father, Giuseppe Rossini, was an impoverished trumpeter who played in miscellaneous bands and orchestras, and his mother, Anna Guidarini, was a singer of secondary roles. His father recognized his son’s musical talents at an early age and arranged for him to study music in Bologna. Rossini began his musical education at the age of six. He quickly showed a natural talent for music. His father encouraged him to pursue his musical studies, he was enrolled in Bologna’s Philharmonic School (now the G.B. Martini State Conservatory of Music) one of the most prestigious music schools in Italy at the time. and composed his first opera series—Demetrio e Polibio. At 15 he had learned the violin, horn, and harpsichord and had often sung in public, even in the theatre, to earn some money.
